What would you choose?

My family and I have previously hosted international exchange students.  Our first exchange student was Nat (Natchaya) from Bangkok,Thailand. She was very quiet and mild mannered. Our second exchange student was Lena from Frankfurt, Germany. She was not so very quiet and mild mannered; in fact I would venture to say the two very polar opposites of each other.
Last night, our kids decided we needed to have a family meeting. The three of them had gotten together and talked about "convincing" mom and dad to host again. Needless to say, we have decided to host again next year. We want to host a male this time for a change in pace. Additionally, we do not want to host someone from the same country that we have previously experienced. My husband does not want to host anyone from Mexico or Spain (or the related countries). I thought maybe a student from Russia, Savannah wants someone from Italy, etc.
My question to each of you is this...
What country would you choose to host an international exchange student from and why?

  1. I think you should have someone from Italy. Their culture is far different from ours and it might be interesting to find out what it's like.

  3. I think that should come from England because I love how they speak. They could tell about how cool it is over there in England.

  4. I would want an exchange student from Italy. The reason why is because I am part italian and it would be great to have someone who can speak fluently in italian. So that it is what I would want.

  5. I think you should get a student from Hungary. I don't know why but I like that country so I think you should get someone from that country. Maybe because they are a lot different from us.

  6. I would host a student from Mexico. The reason is because I am Mexican and I want to see someone who will like Mexicans! I'm not saying that you don't like Mexicans but I'm saying that there are a lot of people who are raisest! Also another reason is because I want to learn some traditions that they use or some foods that they eat!

    1. Lena, our exchange student from Germany, informed us last night that we should host from Mexico also. Her thoughts centered around the fact that perhaps they could translate for us at Wal-Mart when the customers around us were speaking Spanish and such so fast and then laughing while looking our way. That way we would know if we had toilet paper on our feet or something equally as embarrassing.

    1. I chuckled when I read your response. We were talking last night about it again and my husband mentioned that he would like someone that could actually cook, because he wants to try some authentic cuisine. Our prior two students (Thailand and Germany) did not do much cooking.

    1. My daughter would love to visit Italy someday. In fact she wants to be an exchange student herself; however it does cost a lot so I am not sure that will be an option for her. Having someone from Italy would be the next best perhaps.

  15. Here is another thought... If you were going to be an exchange student to another country, where would you want to go and why? What would your thoughts be when first stepping off the plane? Saying goodbye to your family and friends for a year? Etc.
